Softaken Releases Free WEBP to JPG Converter for Broader Image Compatibility

July 13, 2026 — Softaken Software today added a WEBP to JPG converter to its collection of free online tools, allowing users to convert images out of the WEBP format without installing any software or registering for an account. It is a completely browser based tool and no file is sent to Softaken servers at any stage of the process.

Why the Conversion Still Matters
WEBP is widely used on the web due to its smaller file sizes, but it is not supported everywhere. Older editing tools, some social platforms, and content management systems still expect JPG specifically and a WEBP file may not upload or display properly in those instances. Converting to JPG fixes that mismatch, sacrificing some of WEBP’s compression efficiency for a format that’s accepted almost universally.

This is one of the more common requests behind Softaken's online tools in general, not because WEBP is a flawed format, but because so much existing infrastructure – from older CMS platforms to specific upload forms – was never built to expect it.

What Happens in Conversion
The tool functions in the same basic order as Softaken’s other browser-based converters: a user uploads a WEBP file, tweaks quality or size as desired, and downloads the resulting JPG. Users can preview the output on canvas before saving.

“This tool is used at a very specific moment -- somebody has a WEBP file, a platform is rejecting it, and they need a JPG in the next thirty seconds,” said a Softaken Software spokesperson.

Since the entire process happens client-side, in the user's own browser, it keeps working offline once the page loads and behaves consistently across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on desktop and mobile. That’s a small problem but it is a problem and it didn’t need a heavyweight solution.

Some trade-offs you should know:
Conversion between WEBP and JPG formats may result in some minor additional quality loss, as the two formats employ different compression techniques. Softaken states that this is rarely observable unless you are working with highly detailed images. JPG does not support transparency either so any transparent areas in the original WEBP file will be filled with a solid color (usually white) when converted. There’s no hard file-size limit built into the tool, but very large images may take a little longer to process since the browser is doing the work. Like the other Softaken online converters this one converts one image at a time. Those looking to convert files in batches are directed to the company's downloadable Windows software.

Continuing a local processing approach:
The WEBP to JPG converter is the latest in a series of free tools developed by Softaken around a similar concept: images are processed on the user's own machine rather than being uploaded to a server and are free to use. The company says it has been building the collection steadily, based on which format conversions appear most in user requests.

Availability
The tool is free, does not require signup and is available now at https://www.softaken.com/online/webp-to-jpg/.
